Earlobe tears are very common and often occur from continuously wearing heavy earrings. Traumatic events can also cause an earlobe defect, such as someone accidentally pulling out your earring in a pierced ear, a dog bite or injury from a car accident. You might also have an enlarged hole in the lobe due to gauge piercings, and would like the lobe to be repaired to its original state. In addition, aging or natural irregularities may require an earlobe repair to restore the aesthetic appearance of your earlobe. Finally, disfiguring keloid scars can form on the earlobe after piercing and result in itching and pain. Earlobe irregularities can draw unnecessary attention to these defects and take away from your other beautiful features.
Dr. Hooman Khorasani understands that earlobe damage is unsightly, can affect your self-esteem and impact your daily life. With a simple and swift in-office procedure, Dr. Khorasani can repair the defect and help restore your confidence.

Dermal filler injections have become a versatile solution in the field of cosmetic dermatology, not only for facial enhancements but also for restoring the appearance of earlobes. Over time, the earlobes can lose volume and elasticity, leading to sagging or elongation. This can be due to factors such as aging, frequent earring use, or even genetics. Dermal fillers, typically made of hyaluronic acid, collagen, or other biocompatible materials, can be skillfully injected into the earlobes to rejuvenate their appearance.
During the procedure, Dr. Khorasani carefully injects the filler into the earlobe, plumping it up and restoring lost volume. This helps to reduce sagging and wrinkling, creating a more youthful and firm appearance. The treatment is minimally invasive, requiring little to no downtime, making it a convenient option for those seeking a quick aesthetic improvement. It’s a popular choice for individuals who wish to wear earrings more comfortably, as well as those who want to regain a more youthful look in their earlobes. The results are temporary but can last several months to a year, depending on the type of filler used, making it a safe and effective solution for earlobe rejuvenation.
Dr. Hooman Khorasani, a renowned dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon, employs the excision technique to perform earlobe repair, a procedure that offers several significant benefits. This technique is commonly used to address issues such as torn or elongated earlobes due to trauma, heavy earring use, or aesthetic concerns. The procedure typically begins with a thorough consultation to assess the specific needs of the patient. During the actual repair, Dr. Khorasani uses precision and artistry to carefully remove the damaged or excess tissue from the earlobe.
One of the key advantages of the excision technique is its ability to provide a permanent solution. By excising the damaged area and skillfully suturing the edges, Dr. Khorasani ensures that the earlobe is restored to its natural and aesthetically pleasing shape. This technique also allows for customization, enabling Dr. Khorasani to tailor the repair to the patient's unique anatomy and preferences. The incisions are strategically placed to minimize scarring, and the procedure typically takes less than an hour to complete. With Dr. Khorasani's expertise, patients can expect not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing results, allowing them to enjoy a renewed sense of confidence and satisfaction with their earlobes.
If you are unhappy with the appearance of your earlobe due to an accident, tear, sagging, aging, or wearing heavy earrings, then you are likely a good candidate for earlobe repair. In order to be certain, you should schedule an in-office consultation with Dr. Khorasani so he can discuss your options in detail with you.
Unfortunately, a torn earlobe does not repair itself. If it does heal on its own, it will not be symmetric or even, and will not resemble your natural earlobe shape prior to the injury. If you do allow your earlobe to heal on its own, you will still require cosmetic surgery to repair the unsightly defect to restore your ear to its original state.
The procedure is conducted under local anesthesia. During the initial consultation, the tear is evaluated and detailed pre-op instructions are reviewed with the patient. On the day of the procedure, your ear is numbed with topical and then injectable lidocaine, ensuring a painless experience during the remainder of the visit. Once the scar tissue is removed, your earlobe is approximated and sewn back together. Dr. Khorasani utilizes several suturing techniques in order to reduce the formation of irregularities on the ear lobe rim. The entire procedure takes approximately 15 minutes per earlobe.
No, earlobe repair surgery is not painful. We apply a topical numbing cream to the lobe for approximately 20 minutes. Next, Dr. Khorasani will inject the earlobe with lidocaine, to ensure your ear is fully numbed. You may feel some slight pulling or pressure, but other than that, you will not feel a thing! After the numbing medication wears off a few hours after your procedure, the area may be tender or sore for a day or two. You can apply ice to your earlobe(s) to reduce any discomfort you may have. In addition, you may take Tylenol to mitigate this tenderness.
Yes. However, we advise patients to refrain from piercing the affected ear for 3-6 months after earlobe repair surgery. Occasionally, Dr. Khorasani may recommend earlobe rejuvenation with the aid of a dermal filler in order to increase the tensile strength of the earlobe and prevent future tears. This will be evaluated during the consultation, when you and Dr. Khorasani discuss desired outcomes and possible repair options.
Yes, many patients desire to wear heavier earrings or would like a larger earlobe for aesthetic purposes and therefore, may opt to add collagen, hyaluronic acid or fat to their earlobes for additional volume and extra support.
There is no significant down time with this procedure. The post-operative care is minimal. After your surgery, steristrips will be applied over your sutures. Steristrips are like bandaids, and protect your surgical site from infection. There is nothing for you to do at home the first week after your surgery. You are encouraged to avoid strenuous exercise routines for a week to avoid putting tension on the sutures, and do your best to keep the steristrips clean and dry. You will return to the office after one week for suture removal. After suture removal, you will keep the area clean and apply Aquaphor as needed to avoid itchiness (which is common after surgery while you are healing). You should also keep your earlobe out of direct sunlight to avoid hyperpigmentation of the new scar, that will take time to heal. When applying your daily sunscreen, take what is left over from your facial application and apply it to your earlobes as well.
