Belly buttons come in all shapes and sizes. Genetics, surgeries, and pregnancies all strongly influence the defining characteristics of your unique belly button; however, for some patients, nature’s idea of what a belly button should look like does not exactly align with their particular aesthetic goals. Fortunately, advances in cosmetic surgery can help remodel the belly button to match your ideal form.
Dr. Hooman Khorasani is a quadruple board-certified cosmetic surgeon who has spent over ten years helping patients banish unwanted bodily idiosyncrasies through a multitude of minimally-invasive surgeries. This extensive experience combined with Dr. Khorasani’s commitment to procedural perfection directly benefits each patient, as your treatment plan is carefully customized to provide you with optimal cosmetic results.

Genetics are the primary determinant of your belly button’s features. Coding in your DNA dictates whether your belly button is an innie or an outie, how large or small its size is, and if it is oval, circular, or triangular shaped. Pregnancy and surgery can greatly modify the appearance of the belly button, converting it from an innie to an outie or distorting its original shape and size. Piercings also influence the characteristics of the belly button, as these decorative modifications may become stretched or less desirable over time.
Minimally-invasive cosmetic surgery with Dr. Khorasani can help counteract genetics and life events to fashion your belly button according to your aesthetic vision. Each of these in-office procedures is carefully customized to address your particular needs, whether that is a reversal of an outie, size or shape modification, or piercing correction. Together as a team, we will be able to craft a minimally-invasive belly button revision plan to transform your cosmetic goals into reality.
Revisions performed by Dr. Khorasani are highly personalized to account for your pre-existing belly button shape and desired aesthetic outcome. We will work with you to formulate a treatment plan that best addresses your needs!
This minimally-invasive procedure is optimally suited to convert genetic or pregnancy induced outies into innies. Patients bothered by the large size of their belly button may also benefit from a revision surgery. Distortions in shape due to nature, surgery, or childbearing can also be addressed with this in-office treatment. Finally, revisional surgery can diminish the appearance of unwanted or stretched-out belly button piercing holes.
Please note that currently pregnant patients are not candidates for belly button revision.
During your initial consultation, Dr. Khorasani will carefully evaluate the characteristics of your belly button and recommend a personalized revision surgery to maximize your cosmetic outcome. On the day of your procedure, a blueprint of the surgical plan will be meticulously marked over the treatment area using a specialized pen. The treatment area will then be numbed with a local injection of lidocaine, which may sting for five to ten seconds as it is being administered. After you are numbed, you should not experience pain; however, you may experience warmth or tugging as the surgical instruments manipulate the treatment area.
If at any time during the procedure these sensations become bothersome, please inform Dr. Khorasani and he will provide you with additional measures to ensure your comfort. One option is our in-office Pro-Nox system which employs nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”) to reduce anxiety and the experience of pain. Pro-Nox can be self administered by you as needed, to address any discomfort.
This brief, in-office procedure can revise the belly button in less than two hours. Please note, however, that additional time to mark the skin, numb the treatment area, and bandage the surgical site is required. In total, expect to be with us for approximately three hours on the day of surgery. Removal of the stitches two weeks after surgery will also require a fifteen minute office visit.
Following completion of the procedure, our highly skilled medical assistants will dress the belly button with a specialized, multi-layer compression bandage. We will then verbally review with you specific post-operative instructions detailing how to care for the treated area. Don't worry if you can't remember everything! We will provide you with a written copy of these instructions and are available at any time to answer any questions or concerns you may have.
For the first twenty-four hours after your surgery, you must avoid moving the compression bandage or wetting the treated area. After this period, you may remove the compression bandage. Beneath, you will see beige colored Steri-Strips that help the stitches keep the surgical incisions tightly closed. You may now gently wash the treated area with an indirect stream of water. No other bandages are required, as the Steri-Strips will remain in place to protect the wound and promote healing until it is time to take out the stitches. Please plan to return to the office two weeks after your procedure for suture removal.
Aside from its efficacy, patients love belly button revisions because the associated downtime is brief. As dictated by your own personal comfort, you may resume (most) normal activities one day after surgery. We do, however, recommend avoiding strenuous exercise, bending, lifting or stretching maneuvers for at least 2 weeks following treatment.
Swelling and bruising of the belly button area are expected, but these effects typically resolve within five days. Some patients may experience mild discomfort starting a few hours after surgery and the area will be tender for about one week. We, therefore, recommend our patients take two tablets of Extra Strength Tylenol every 4-6 hours for pain control.
Changes to the appearance of your belly button are immediately visible after your procedure; however, as with all surgical interventions, the final results of your revision will require several months to fully appreciate. Consequently, we strongly recommend patients schedule their treatment at least three months prior to an event in which the midriff will be bared.
