Thinning hair and bald spots can be very distressing for men and women alike. This problem is extremely common: up to forty percent of females and sixty-six percent of males will experience hair loss at some point in their life. You are not alone!
There are many reasons why someone may suffer from thinning and/or loss of hair. As we age, hair naturally loses some of its youthful thickness and is less able to regenerate follicles that have been shed. Hormonal changes can also contribute to changes in hair thickness and density, particular for women in the postpartum and menopausal period. Autoimmune conditions can also lead to hair loss, the most common of which is known as alopecia areata, which causes the hair to fall out in small patches.
Regardless of the cause of hair loss, this condition may be highly disconcerting. Patients suffering from reduced hair density or thickness often describe feeling less self-assured professionally, socially and romantically due to this very common problem.
Dr. Hooman Khorasani and his staff are dedicated to helping you recover your lost hair and reinstating the sense of self-confidence that you deserve. Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is a non-invasive, yet innovative restorative hair loss treatment that uses your own growth factors to stimulate the root of your hair follicles. The result? A healthy scalp covered with fuller and thicker hair.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) is a cutting-edge hair loss therapy that utilizes growth factors from your own blood to rejuvenate the scalp. These growth factors are found within your blood’s platelets, which are small cells that circulate in your bloodstream to help mend large and small tears. It’s no surprise that these repair cells contain a variety of special nutrients that stimulate restoration and growth. As a result, PRP has historically been used to successfully facilitate wound healing in the area of regenerative medicine.
Always seeking to provide innovative and efficacious therapies to his patients, Dr. Khorasani was one of the first to consider that the restorative properties of PRP could be used to treat hair loss. To provide firm evidence for this hypothesis, Dr. Khorasani conducted one of the largest clinical trials evaluating the efficacy of PRP to improve hair density and thickness. Blinded evaluation of the study results indicated that Dr. Khorasani’s suspicions were correct: PRP effectively regenerates and thickens hair for patients suffering from hair loss.
Evaluation of PRP in multiple clinical trials has indicated that the best candidates for treatment with PRP are those with typical male or female pattern baldness, medically known as androgenetic alopecia. Both male and female pattern baldness induce a loss of hair on the crown of the head. Males, however, will also notice a receding hairline and females will experience a widening of the hair part. Patients suffering from male and female pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia) are most likely to notice a marked improvement in hair density and thickness following therapy with PRP.
During your initial consultation, Dr. Khorasani will evaluate your hair loss to ensure that it is not a sign of an underlying health issue. He may order labs to check for iron deficiency, thyroid disease and/or an autoimmune disorder. You will be scheduled for treatment once he has determined that the hair loss is a stand-alone problem.
On the day of the procedure, you will have blood drawn from your arm in exactly the same manner as you would for routine bloodwork. Your blood is then placed in a special device called a centrifuge that spins the blood extremely quickly for ten minutes. This process separates the “rich” plasma from the “poor” plasma, the “rich” plasma being the portion that is filled with thousands of platelets. These platelets are worth their weight in gold, as they contain the “goodies” in your blood that promote cell healing and regeneration.
Using a tiny needle, Dr. Khorasani carefully injects the PRP into your scalp, ensuring that the PRP is evenly distributed. Areas of greater hair loss will receive additional injections to optimize growth. During the procedure, you may experience discomfort and/or stinging; however, we’ll routinely check in so you can inform us if at any point you find these sensations to be intolerable. We will provide you with an array of additional comfort measures, including our in-office Pro-Nox system which employs nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”) to reduce anxiety and the experience of pain. Pro-Nox can be self administered by you, as needed, to address any discomfort.
Although typically used for hair restoration purposes, Dr. Khorasani’s commitment to advancing therapeutic options available to patients has led to his pioneering work in using PRP to successfully address other aesthetic problems. PRP injected into the face can help improve acne in young patients and enhance radiance in older patients. Combining PRP with microneedling enhances the production of collagen and removal of scar structures. As such, this combination therapy can be used to help treat acne scars, cellulite and stretch marks. The healing properties of PRP also make this treatment an excellent partner to speed the recovery and enhance the results from other cosmetic procedures. These include, but are not limited to, laser resurfacing, fat grafting, liposuction, thread lifts and surgical lifts.
Dr. Khorasani is considered a leading authority in PRP treatments, given his pivotal role in conducting one of the largest clinical trials evaluating the efficacy of this therapy. Expertly versed in its mechanism, applications and techniques, Dr. Khorasani will be able to create a treatment plan tailor-made to address your particular needs.
Candidates most likely to benefit from PRP for hair loss are those with mild to moderate male or female pattern loss. Patients with mild acne scars, cellulite, and/or stretch marks will also likely respond to PRP combined with microneedling. Young patients with acne should also consider incorporating PRP into their regular acne-fighting regimen to reap optimal results.
Patients of all ages, skin types, and blood types are eligible to receive PRP treatments; however, if you have an underlying blood or autoimmune condition, please alert Dr. Khorasani so that he can determine the safest treatment plan for you.
The results of PRP are progressive and additive, meaning that they improve over time and with multiple treatments. For those undergoing restorative hair therapy with PRP, you will notice within the first one to two weeks after treatment that you are losing less hair in the shower or when brushing your hair. Visibly improved hair thickness appears one to two months after initiating therapy. Optimal results are typically seen with patients who receive four to six treatments spaced four to six weeks apart. As with all non-invasive cosmetic procedures, yearly maintenance therapy is recommended to sustain your new, healthy hair.
It takes approximately thirty minutes to draw your blood, spin it in the centrifuge, and draw the PRP into syringes. Injecting the PRP requires another fifteen to twenty minutes. If you wish to combine PRP with microneedling, you can expect your treatment to last an additional twenty to twenty-five minutes.
Aside from its clinically-proven efficacy, patients also love PRP hair restoration treatments because they are associated with little to no downtime. After treatment, most patients describe a mild pressure sensation that is similar to what one feels when wearing a helmet. Some may suffer from a headache or tenderness, which can be readily remedied with Tylenol. Scalp redness or tingling may also occur. Importantly, all these side effects resolve within twenty-four to forty-eight hours after treatment.
Prior to treatment with PRP, please avoid smoking since it will slow down your healing process and can compromise your outcome. Additionally, if permitted by the prescribing physician, be sure to avoid any blood thinners (ibuprofen, aspirin, etc.) for at least seven days prior to your treatment. Alcohol and fish oil supplements should also be avoided during this time, as these products can thin your blood.
Following PRP therapy, avoid showering or washing the treated area for twenty-four hours. If you have received PRP for hair restoration purposes, we recommend sleeping propped up with as many pillows as you can tolerate the night of your procedure, to allow the product to thoroughly sink into the scalp. Continue to abstain from blood thinners (if permitted by the prescribing physician), alcohol, smoking and fish oil for at least forty-eight hours.
In 2019, Dr. Hooman Khorasani completed one of the largest clinical trials ever conducted at an academic institution on the topic of PRP and hair loss. This study was awarded the prestigious “Alastair and Jean Carruthers Award for Top Ranked American Society of Dermatologic Surgeons (ASDS) Cosmetic Fellow Research” at the society’s annual conference. The results were later published in the Journal of American Academy of Dermatology, a premier dermatologic publication.
